10 Reasons to take I/GCSE Business

So obviously, I’m a bit bias. I studied Business at university and loved it and I now teach it, so of course I think everyone should take GCSE Business. Having said that, I do actually have some objective reasons why I think Business is a great choice for GCSE, so here are my top ten reasons.

1. It will Help if you want to Start Your Own Business

You might be considering business because you think you’ll want to run your own one day, that’s certainly why I studied it. Whether you just want to do something you love on a freelance basis so you can be your own boss, or want to start your now business empire, business GCSE is a great starting point.

2. You’ll Understand the Organisations you Work for

If you don’t think you’ll ever want to run your own business, studying it can still be useful because it will help you understand the organisations you work for. By understanding how businesses work you can be a more successful employee.

3. You’ll Know Marketing Tricks When you See Them

Understanding how businesses market their products to you can save you being manipulated into buying things you don’t want or need.

4. You’ll be Better at Applying for Jobs

By learning how the recruitment process works from the employers side, you’ll better understand what they are looking for when you submit applications and attend interviews.

5. You’ll Know your Rights

Learning about business includes employment law so you’ll understand your rights as an employee and can make sure you aren’t taken advantage of.

6. Lots of it is Just Common Sense

A lot of what you learn in business studies is actually common sense once you understand the basics of what businesses are trying to achieve.

7. The Exam Starts with Multiple Choice Questions

This gives you a nice warm up before the more difficult questions.

8. The Majority of the Marks come from Short Answer Questions

It varies a bit by exam board but for example, for OCR exam board, there are two papers, each worth 80 marks. 15 marks come from the multiple choice questions, 49 come from short answer questions and the last 16 come from a 7 mark and a 9 mark question. This is great if long answers don’t suit you.

9. The Questions are Quite Formulaic

This means that once you understand what the question is looking for, you can use a formula to make sure you include everything that’s needed.

10. You can Practice Maths at the Same Time

While the inclusion of maths might be off putting for some people, if you’re studying GCSE maths too, you can kill two birds with one stone when you practice the maths needed for business.

If you’re looking for a course to support business studies we offer OCR GCSE and Edexcel IGCSE will be launching in July.
